Defining Your Company Core

Before starting a tree care company, you will need to have an idea what is important to you and what your company stands for. Your company Vision, Mission and Core Values need to make a statement about your passion. These will be the driving force and purpose behind your company. These CORE ELEMENTS of your company will give you an identity, will define your purpose, will guide decisions, can help envision your future path and can help attract talent. These statements and values need to be more than “we’ll provide good tree care”. Providing good tree care is a baseline standard for any company, but it cannot be your vision or mission. Here is a sample Vision, Mission and Core Value for Company X (a newly forming mythical tree care company):

Mission Statement

Mission Statement = The reason the company exists.

Company X will be an innovative leader providing high quality tree care for townhomes and HOA’s. We will strive to cultivate and develop long-lasting relationships that focus on connecting clients with their trees and landscape.  We will provide tree care recommendations based on knowledge, experience, and a conscientious point of view.  Our passion for trees will be evident while we educate, involve, and engage our clients.  We will provide practical, ethical budget management.  While many of our competitors diversify, we will specialize and focus on providing the highest level of tree care.   We will strive to not only meet, but exceed customer expectations by providing attentive, proactive communication.

Vision Statement

Company Vision = Where the company is going.

Company X’s underlying drive will be to become THE ideal tree care company for HOA’s and townhomes in the metro area.  Our operations will be structured with a proactive nature and the need for continual improvement and consistency.  Company X will strive for sustainable competitive advantage over local competitors while following the principles of kaizen (continual state of improvement).  Company X will attempt to grow to $3,000,000 in gross revenue by 2025.  We will try to produce a profit margin of 20% with a service break down of 20% Plant Health Care, 40% Landscape Care and 40% General Tree Care.   Company X will continue to grow with structured discipline with the intent of selling the company to a local competitor or transition to employees internally by 2025.

Core Values

Core Values = Defining principles of the company that drive towards the Vision & Mission.

Company X’s baseline operations will be disciplined and engrained with 3 basic core values which are (1) consistency throughout, (2) being proactive in nature and (3) operating with a state of continual improvement.  These core values will be evident in all aspects of our business.
